(2) An acid etch brush with polypropylene fibers
(3) Muriatic acid at 20° Baume strength
(4) NELSONITE PREP A
(5) Water
(6) A garden hose with a jet nozzle

UNPAINTED SURFACES
The concrete has to be clean before painting. Grease, oil, dirt and waxes have to be removed because they interfere with the adhesion of the coating. Also, the surface has to be "open" so that the paint can obtain an anchor in the substrate itself. There are a number of ways of cleaning concrete surfaces. The most common, however, is to scrub the surface with an acid etch brush and a cleaning solution made up of muriatic acid (20° Baume strength), water and PREP A. This solution will clean the surface of both organic and inorganic contaminates.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES
Remove all loose, flaking and peeling paint. Sand all glossy areas to aid the adhesion of the new coating. The surface should be clean and free of all waxes, grease, dirt, dust, grime, oil or other foreign matter. Scrub the surface with a solution made up of 1 gallon of water and 5 ounces of PREP A. Rinse thoroughly with a jet noule which will aid in the removal of any loose previous coating.

MIXING THE CLEANING SOLUTION
Make up a cleaning solution made up of 1 part muriatic acid to 2 parts of water (1:2 ratio). For each gallon of solution, add 5 ounces of PREP A. Typically, the cleaning solution is prepared in a 5-gallon plastic pail.
(1) Add 2 gallons of water.
(2) Add 1 gallon of muriatic acid. Always add acid to the water and not vice versa.
(3) Add 15 ounces of PREP A.
Stir well.
Do not allow the cleaning solution to remain on the surface more than 5 minutes before rinsing.

CLEANING THE SURFACE
CAUTION! Do the cleaning procedure safely. Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, slip-resistant footwear, safety goggles, rubber gloves and an air/gas cartridge respirator. Divide the area to be cleaned into sections and do one section at a time. Each gallon of solution will clean about 150 sq. ft. Scrub a section vigorously with the cleaning solution. After it has been scrubbed, rinse each section immediately with a garden hose with a jet nozzle. Do not allow the cleaning solution to remain on the surface more than 5 minutes. Rinse carefully and thoroughly. Finish the rest of the surface to be cleaned in this manner.

IMPORTANT! Once the surface Is dry, check it carefully to be sure that it is clean and "open." The surface should feel rough to the touch-like fine sandpaper. Walk the job site with a cup of water. Every so often, place several drops of water on the surface. Observe if the drops of water bead up or are absorbed into the surface. If the water droplets bead up on the surface, it is NOT open enough forthe paint to get an anchor. It will be necessary to acid wash that area again, perhaps using a stronger acid-to-water solution.

APPLYING THE COLORCOAT
ON UNPAINTED SURFACES
Two coats are required. Pre-dampen the surface by spray-misting before applying the first coat. Thoroughly stir the paint before and during application. The first coat should be thinned with 1 pint of water per gallon of paint, and should be brushed well into the surface for a good "bite." Allow to dry for 4 hours. The second coat should be at full strength, and may be applied with a brush or roller. For best results, criss-cross the coats.

ON PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES
For best results, two coats should be used, both at full strength. Criss-cross the coats. Thoroughly stir the paint before and during application. The first coat should be applied by brush; the second coat (or the only coat) by brush or roller. Allow to dry for 4 hours. Properly prepared painted surfaces can take light foot traffic after 12 hours, heavier foot traffic after 24 hours and when coated with CLEARGARD EPOXY.

You may drive on and park after 7 days. CLEARGARD ACRYLIC is not for use in areas where automobiles are driven or parked. The drying times will be of longer duration when air and surface temperatures are below 72°F, or the relative humidity is above 50%.

CLEANUP
After use, brushes and rollers may be easily cleaned with warm soapy water.

APPLYING THE CLEARCOAT
For an even longer service life and easier cleaning and dusting of the colorful surface, additionally use one of NELSON ITE's two clear topcoats. Check which CLEARGARD finish is most appropriate for your purpose from the Product Information section on this web site.
